REAL ID Enforcement Starts Today – Here’s What That Actually Means for You

After years of delays, reminders, and airport signs that felt like permanent fixtures, REAL ID enforcement officially begins today – May 7, 2025.

From this point forward, federal agencies like the TSA will no longer accept state-issued IDs that aren’t REAL ID compliant. That means your old driver’s license might not cut it at the airport anymore.

Well—technically, you can still fly without a REAL ID… but expect delays. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that people without one will still be allowed to board flights, but they’ll face “an extra step” at security—potentially longer lines or additional verification.

Want a smoother airport experience?
Now’s the time to:

  • Double-check if your ID has the REAL ID star (top right corner)
  • Enroll in programs like CLEAR or TSA PreCheck
  • PRO TIP: You can get Free TSA Clear with this credit card and a 100,000 point bonus towards free flights!
  • Arrive early if you’re unsure about your ID
  • Bring a valid passport if you don’t have a REAL ID

REAL ID was designed to enhance security by introducing stricter ID standards. All 50 states, DC, and 5 territories now issue them—but TSA says only about 81% of travelers currently show up with a REAL ID or passport.

That remaining 19%? It’s unclear if it includes international travelers with foreign passports (which are acceptable), but the bottom line is this: you don’t want to be stuck in that group.

If you still need a REAL ID, head to the DMV with:

  • A valid ID, passport, or birth certificate
  • Proof of Social Security number
  • Proof of your date of birth
  • Two documents showing your current address

🗳️ And a heads-up for voters:

Recent reports suggest that REAL ID or a valid passport may be required to vote in the 2026 midterm elections in some states. So if you care about flying and voting without roadblocks, now’s the time to get compliant.

Think about it: the law was passed in 2005. The first enforcement date was 2008. Seventeen years and countless delays later—it’s finally here. No more excuses.
